I remember him flying home for a death in the family but I don't remember it being his Mother. Either way, "Issues" was penned and recorded awhile before that happened.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a factual error in that interview regarding who died. However, if it was his mom, that might be why he was so touchy about it now.

I imagine it is hard for musicians because they write a song about a way that they feel at a particular juncture in their lives, and then they don't feel that way anymore - life changes, they change, and it's like rereading old diary entries, dredging up old hurts. Just my opinion though.

I could never understand the part that Shim kind of talks/screams in the middle.

"Issues" exemplifies SP's unique ability to merge various musical styles in order to tell an intricate story. Hamlet's instructions to the actors: "suit the action to the word, the word to the action" is demonstrated here musically. The lyrical metaphor, waking up for breaking free, is told throughout the music. The drudging of the bass in the opening embodies the drudgery of being under someone's thumb; transition to the first chorus speaks of pent up emotion as the guitar pounds away on scales. When the vocals go a little nasal on "they thought was just a phase" to breathy on "but it consumed me" the tone shifts from mocking what "they" thought was childish, to the speaker's innermost desire "consuming" him.

I could probably write a term paper on this song alone...
