Interview with Shim Moore from Sick Puppies: 'Connect' SPECIAL
By Markos Papadatos
Aug 28, 2013

Rock band Sick Puppies is made up of lead singer and guitarist Shim Moore, bassist Emma Anzai and drummer Mark Goodwin. They are originally from Australia and they are signed to Capitol Records.

Moore from the rock group took some time from his busy schedule to chat about their new music and touring.

Their latest studio album “Connect” reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 all-genre album charts. “That was great since we have been away for a while so the fact that anybody remembered us was a blessing,” the Sick Puppies front-man said. “We spoke to the fans every week about they wanted to hear and we just made sure that what we wrote was up to par with where they were at the time. We picked the best songs for this record. We wrote 100 songs and one out of every 10 was a really great song, so those were the ones that made it,” he added.

Sick Puppies played for the first time at The Paramount in Huntington, New York, on August 3. “That was great,” Moore said. “There were a lot of people there and we were happy.”

Their CD’s lead single “There’s No Going Back” made the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs charts, as well as No. 9 on Billboard’s Active Rock charts. “There was always debate on what was going to be the first single and we listened to them all and thought that this song melodically was the best foot forward,” he said.

Moore listed the title cut “Connect” as well as its closing track “Under a Very Black Sky” as his two personal favorite songs from their new CD. “I love ‘Connect’ since it is a perfect song and it works in every way. ‘Under a Very Black Sky’ is great because it is the most musical piece of work that we have ever done and I like how we were able to create that,” he explained.

On their plans for the future, Moore remarked, “We will be touring at the moment. We have not decided on the next single yet, so we are focused on playing shows.”
His proudest professional accomplishment with Sick Puppies is being afforded the privilege to play on “Big Day Out,” an Australian music festival. “We grew up watching that festival so when we were invited to play there it was pretty big. ‘Big Day Out’ happens once a year in Australia,” he said.

Most recently, they accumulated one million fans on their official Facebook page. “That was really cool and we are actually doing a Skype chat with our one millionth Facebook fan within the next couple of days. That was the prize,” he said.

Prior to their live shows, he revealed that the band members are warming up separately within a 45-minute time window. “Emma is doing warm-ups and Mark is getting his hands ready and I am doing vocal warm-ups and body stretches. Ten minutes before we all get together and sing a few chords to get the band synced up. Other than that, there is no football huddling,” he said.

On November 8, the group is expected to perform at Oneonta Theatre in Oneonta, New York. “The fans there can expect the best show possible in rock at the moment. It’s a money-back guarantee and if they are not happy, I will give them their money back,” he said jokingly.

For hopefuls who wish to go into rock music, Moore recommended, “It is best for people to spend as much time as they can creating what they are selling, rather than selling what they are creating. With the advent of Facebook and Twitter people are just spending their time promoting what they are doing, and they are not creating as much as they can, so their music and their fans are suffering. My advice would be to promote less than they actually spend time creating.”

He noted that he would love to someday collaborate with pop superstar Lady Gaga since it would be “nuts” and he praised British pop songstress Jessie J for being fun and quirky.

Moore concluded, “If people want to get more involved, they can go to Sick Puppies World Crew, which is a dedicated fan site, and they can become ambassadors and get tickets and backstage passes to the show,” he said.
