Sick Puppies Q&A
Bassist Emma Anzai tells us how she really feels.
by Spence D.
April 3, 2007 - Coming straight out of the Down Under wonderland of Sydney, Australia, the Sick Puppies are a vibrant power trio driven by guitars, pounding bass, and bristling drums.
While frontman Shimon Moore grinds and wails and skin pounding Mark Goodwin keeps the rhythm fluctuating it's Emma Anzai who grounds everything in sultry low-end theory.
We caught up with the four-string femme fatale recently and subjected her to our patented Q&A. Needless to say she came through with flying colors, in terms of her answers.
IGN Music: Who is your favorite superhero or super villain and why?
Emma Anzai: I'll go the classic Superman, because he's Superman!!!
IGN Music: What is your favorite late night snack when you're in the studio or out on tour and why?
Emma Anzai: Dark chocolate graham crackers because they are so rich yet so small.
IGN Music: Who or what are your NON-musical influences and why?
Emma Anzai: Giovanni Ribisi because he's odd and unique and I can always appreciate someone who isn't stock standard.
IGN Music: What is the motto you live by?
Emma Anzai: Smile like you mean it.
IGN Music: Which do you prefer, performing music live or creating it in the studio and why?
Emma Anzai: Both are completely different facets of the creative process that is music. Both are rewarding but I prefer live because for me it's cathartic and I have a lot of nervous energy to expel.
IGN Music: Do you remember the first concert you ever went to?
Emma Anzai: Silverchair in Tokyo '95.
IGN Music: Do you remember the first album you ever bought? If so, was it on CD, vinyl, cassette or 8-track? And most importantly, why did you buy it?
Emma Anzai: CD, Silverchair, Frogstomp. I bought it because I was looking for something new.
IGN Music: What is your favorite album and why?
Emma Anzai: Green Day, Dookie. Because it takes me back to the time period when I listened to it while I was living in Japan trying to figure out what to do with my life.
IGN Music: Can you name a musician that you've always wanted to work with but haven't yet and why.
Emma Anzai: Probably someone like Trent Reznor to see what would come out, I like the dark side, haven't had the opportunity though.
IGN Music: If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Emma Anzai: For it to be much like the sports industry where your talent dictates your success.
IGN Music: What has been your most important professional accomplishment to date?
Emma Anzai: Making a record that we as a band are all very proud of as we believe it's very best we could do at that period in our lives.
IGN Music: What has been your most memorable or most f**ked-up gig to date and why?
Emma Anzai: The most memorable being the Big Day out in Australia because the people had so much energy for us!
IGN Music: Do your dreams/nightmares influence your music?
Emma Anzai: Sometimes concepts pop up - usually weird ones.
IGN Music: What do you like to do on your days off?
Emma Anzai: Nothing, absolutely nothing.
IGN Music: What do you do on the tour bus between shows to while away the time?
Emma Anzai: Spend a lot of time on the Net and iPod and watch a lot of movies.
IGN Music: What do you miss most about home when you're on the road?
Emma Anzai: Nice food and coffee.
IGN Music: What do you like most about visiting other countries when on tour?
Emma Anzai: I love peeping into a new culture and having the opportunity to live it for a moment.
IGN Music: What is your kindred spirit animal and why?
Emma Anzai: Probably a cat because they're quiet.
IGN Music: What is your favorite book?
Emma Anzai: There wouldn't be just one but definitely bios on interesting people.
IGN Music: What is your favorite boy parttail and why?
Emma Anzai: Anything that's sweet.
IGN Music: Can you name the last thing that moved you.
Emma Anzai: The bus &...Just kidding, rolling into a city and being able to feel the life in the air, some cities have it some don't.
IGN Music: How about the last thing that pissed you off.
Emma Anzai: Hitting my hand on the corner of the bench really hard.
IGN Music: Do you harbor any Pet Peeves?
Emma Anzai: Liars.
IGN Music: What about Superstitions?
Emma Anzai: I couldn't comply with them all; I'd be a crazy woman.
IGN Music: Who is the coolest person you have ever met?
Emma Anzai: We just recently toured the big day out in Australia and shared the stage with Muse and MCR. They are all really cool.
